I Fixed a Tractor Using John Deere’s Self-Repair Service. Farmers Aren’t Sold on It

Standing in the middle of John Deere’s sprawling facility, I found myself surrounded by people who had every reason to be annoyed with me. For years, I had written articles for WIRED about their company’s reluctance to let anyone but official technicians repair its products. I had described digital locks, dealer monopolies, and the quiet fury of farmers who felt they did not truly own the expensive machines in their barns. Yet here they were, offering congratulations and patient smiles, as if I were a guest rather than a critic. Among them was Jahmy Hindman, John Deere’s senior vice president and chief technology officer, a man who has spent 30 years with the company. He had flown in from Illinois to show me something he clearly believed would change the conversation: Operations Center Pro Service, a self-repair software platform designed to pair with nearly every electronic-enabled machine Deere has ever built. It is, in his words, “owner-friendly.” “I think that’s always been our intent,” he said. The words were delivered with a sincerity that made the moment feel almost surreal. Because for as long as I have covered this industry, that intent has not been obvious to the people who actually use Deere equipment. Farmers, ranchers, and independent mechanics have spent more than a decade complaining that their tractors are locked down, that they cannot so much as swap a sensor without a dealer technician showing up with proprietary software, and that the company treats its customers like tenants rather than owners. Standing there among Deere’s engineers and executives, I wanted to believe Hindman. But I also knew that the proof would not come from a polished presentation. It would come from whether this new platform actually gave farmers the freedom they had been demanding. The room had the calm, controlled energy of a corporate showcase, and no one mentioned the lawsuits or the settlement checks. No one brought up the bitter testimony of farmers who had watched their harvests stall because a software lock refused to let them proceed. The atmosphere was one of optimism, or at least the carefully manufactured version of optimism that large companies perfect. I had to keep reminding myself that this was the same John Deere that had spent years fighting right-to-repair legislation, arguing that its software was a matter of safety and intellectual property.

To understand the significance of what Deere is offering, you have to understand how we got here. John Deere is the largest agricultural machine manufacturer in the United States, and over the past two decades its equipment has evolved from simple iron to something closer to a fleet of roaming data centers. Modern tractors are loaded with controllers, radios, sensors, and antennas. Some have more computing power than the spacecraft that landed humans on the moon. Many newer machines connect to 4G networks, continuously sending location, fuel usage, engine performance, and operational data back to Deere’s cloud servers. Some models can operate autonomously, following preprogrammed routes across a field with no one in the cab. This technology has made farming more efficient, more precise, and more profitable. But it has also created a strange new kind of dependency. Because all of those systems are protected by digital locks, only Deere’s official dealer technicians are supposed to access them. If a farmer needs a diagnostic reset, a software update, or a replacement part that requires programming, the machine often refuses to cooperate until an authorized technician intervenes. This is not a minor inconvenience. In the middle of harvest season, a broken combine can mean tens of thousands of dollars in lost crop, and waiting days for a dealer technician can be catastrophic. It is also a matter of ownership. A farmer who buys a $600,000 tractor owns the steel, the engine, and the tires, but not the software that makes it run. That software can be used to deny service, void warranties, and steer owners toward dealer-sourced parts. This frustration has fueled the right-to-repair movement for years, and John Deere has been its most visible target. In April, the company agreed to pay $99 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by equipment owners who said they were overcharged for repairs. In July, it settled a separate case brought by the Federal Trade Commission, agreeing to change some of its repair practices. In both settlements, Deere admitted no wrongdoing. Repair advocates were not impressed. The money, they said, was a fraction of what farmers had spent on unnecessary dealer visits, and the promised changes were vague, slow, and likely to be buried in fine print.

John Deere tells a different story. In that story, the company is not a villain but a steward of safety, security, and reliability. Its machines are so complex, executives argue, that untrained tinkering can be dangerous. Software is protected for good reason: to prevent accidents, protect proprietary technology, and keep machines running the way they were designed. With that defense in mind, the company introduced Operations Center Pro Service in 2025, positioning it as the answer to years of criticism. The platform is a subscription-based self-repair tool. For an individual machine, the annual cost starts at $195. For larger operations or independent repair shops that want access to every machine in Deere’s fleet, the price starts at $4,995 per year. If the fleet includes agricultural and turf equipment, the cost rises to $5,995 per year. In exchange, subscribers get the ability to connect Deere’s software directly to their equipment, either over Wi-Fi or through a physical cable. Once connected, the system uses the machine’s serial number to pull up all relevant manuals, service bulletins, diagnostic information, and historical data from Deere’s broader cloud infrastructure. It is, in many ways, the most comprehensive repair tool the company has ever made available to its customers. The system is also getting a dose of artificial intelligence. John Deere recently added an AI chatbot called JD to its Operations Center, designed to help users navigate the enormous amount of information contained in the platform. I did not have a chance to try JD during my visit, but the idea is straightforward: instead of digging through hundreds of pages of schematics, a farmer can ask a question in plain English and get an answer. Hindman explained the need for such a tool by pointing to the sheer scale of modern machinery. “As the tractor products grow in size, they also grow in number of controllers that are necessary in order to make it all work,” he said. “So it can be super complex.” In some cases, he noted, a single tractor can contain more than 50 controllers, each one responsible for a different function. Without software assistance, diagnosing a problem could take days.

Once you are inside Pro Service, the experience is surprisingly smooth. The platform feels less like a piece of industrial software and more like a consumer web application. You can customize the dashboard to show the machines you care about, track the full history of software updates for each piece of equipment, and create a maintenance schedule that fits your workflow. If a machine throws a diagnostic code, the software will walk you through the process of understanding what that code means and, in many cases, guide you through the fix. It will tell you which tools you need, which components are involved, and what safety precautions to take. For people who are not professional mechanics, this kind of guided repair is genuinely empowering. It turns an impenetrable wall of wiring diagrams into a step-by-step tutorial. If you need a new part, the system will serve up a link to the product in John Deere’s online shop, as neatly as an Amazon recommendation. You can even download certain features for offline use, which matters a great deal to farmers who live and work in rural areas where internet connections are unreliable or nonexistent. If your tractor breaks down in the middle of a field, the last thing you want is to rely on a cloud service that cannot connect. Deere has clearly thought about that. The offline capability is a nod to the reality of agricultural work, and it is one of the most genuinely useful aspects of the platform. During my demonstration, I was struck by how far the company has come from the days when a repair manual was a bulky binder that only dealers could access. The software is fast, intuitive, and polished. It is hard to argue that Deere is still doing nothing. And yet, as I clicked through the interface, I could not shake the feeling that I was inside a very beautiful, very well-designed walled garden. The platform gives you access to a great deal of information, but it is information that Deere controls. The links lead to Deere’s shop. The manuals are Deere’s manuals. The diagnostic logic is Deere’s logic. If you want to use an aftermarket part, the software cannot necessarily help you make it work. If you want to modify your machine in a way Deere does not approve, the platform will not guide you through that. It is a self-repair system, but only to the extent that the self-repair follows the company’s rules.

That, in a nutshell, is the problem that repair advocates have with Pro Service. It is better than nothing, but it is not the open access they have been demanding. Under this system, John Deere still holds the keys. It sets the prices. It decides which features are included at each subscription tier. It can change the terms of service whenever it wants. It can revoke access if it decides a customer is abusing the system. And perhaps most importantly, it still defines what counts as a legitimate repair. If a farmer wants to install a third-party controller, bypass a safety interlock, or reconfigure a machine for a use that Deere never intended, the software will not help. In fact, the software may actively prevent it. That is not hypothetical. Farmers have reported cases where a simple repair, such as replacing a faulty sensor, required a software authorization that only a dealer could provide. Pro Service may reduce the number of those cases, but it does not eliminate the underlying structure of control. Independent repair shops are especially skeptical. For them, a $4,995 annual subscription is a significant business expense, and it still does not guarantee that they can repair every machine. They worry that Deere is simply monetizing the repair process that should have been open all along. They point out that the company could have released its service manuals and diagnostic tools years ago, without subscriptions, without digital locks, without an AI chatbot. Instead, they argue, Deere has chosen to package basic repair information as a premium product, while still maintaining the right to veto repairs it does not like. The FTC settlement was supposed to address some of these concerns, but critics say the requirements are too weak and too slow. The $99 million class-action settlement, meanwhile, mostly goes to farmers who paid for dealer repairs in the past; it does not give them the freedom to repair their own machines in the future. In the eyes of the right-to-repair movement, Pro Service is a step in the right direction, but it is a small step, taken reluctantly, and only after legal pressure and public shame.

So where does that leave someone like me, standing in a room full of John Deere employees who have just spent an hour showing me their shiny new platform? I left the demonstration feeling genuinely conflicted. There is no doubt that Pro Service is a real improvement. It is useful, well-designed, and far more open than anything Deere has offered before. The people I met were not caricatures of corporate greed. They were engineers and technicians who seemed proud of their work and sincerely interested in helping farmers keep their machines running. Jahmy Hindman, in particular, came across as a thoughtful executive who believes his company is moving in the right direction. But belief is not the same as proof. For years, John Deere built its business on the idea that its machines were too complex for ordinary people to understand. It fought legislation, dismissed complaints, and treated its own customers as potential security threats. Now it wants to be seen as a champion of owner-friendly repair. That kind of trust cannot be created with a software platform alone. It can only be earned through consistent, verifiable behavior over time. The farmers I have spoken to over the years are not unreasonable people. They do not want to hack their tractors or compromise safety. They want to be able to fix what they own, on their own schedules, with their own tools, and without paying a toll every time something breaks. Pro Service is a start, but it is still a toll road. The road may be smoother than it used to be, but it is still owned by John Deere, and the gates are still controlled by the company. Whether that is enough to satisfy the right-to-repair movement will depend on what Deere does next. If it continues to open up, if it lowers prices, if it allows independent repair shops to compete on equal terms, then perhaps the olive branch will become something more. If it continues to treat repair as a revenue stream rather than a right, then no amount of polish will change the fundamental relationship. As I walked out of the facility, I thought about the farmers who would read this article. Some of them will see Pro Service as a welcome tool. Others will see it as a public relations stunt. The truth, as usual, lies somewhere in between. But the one thing I know for sure is this: the word “owner-friendly” should not be a slogan. It should be a promise. And promises, in the world of farming, are only as good as the harvest they help bring in.
