Four Tips To Fat Loss, Weight Training, and A Slimmer Body

Posted on timeOctober 31st, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

Fat loss, weight training, and a slimmer body are all interrelated. Without one the other two cannot exist, and vice versa. You have to look at the whole picture before you can achieve the body you want. With that being said, the following four tips will help you understand the elements that allow you to achieve all three goals.

1. Fat Loss, Weight Training, and You

In order to achieve fat loss, you have to incorporate weight training into your exercise regimen. Weight training helps you target key areas that traditional exercises cannot reach. Weight training, combined with other elements can help you achieve that slimmer body that you are reaching for.

2. Eating Your Way To A Slimmer Body

It is no secret that to stay slim, you have to eat right. In order to achieve a slim body, you also have to eat right. You have to include foods that are healthy and reduce the amounts of fats and sugar you are consuming. To achieve fat loss, weight training and a healthy diet, with adequate water consumption each day must be implemented as well.

3. Three Meals a Day or Six?

We have always been taught that we must eat three meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, what we are now finding is that eating as many as six times each day can help you in the area of fat loss. By breaking up your meals, you will find that you are not eating as much at each sitting. It allows you to watch what you are eating better and how much you consume. It also increases your metabolism, as well as the amount of fat or calories you are burning as well.

4. Supplements Work

Supplements are an important part of your fat loss, weight training, and slimmer body regimen. With supplements, you can feed your body the all important vitamins and minerals that you may not be getting throughout the day as you should. A healthy body gets an adequate amount of vitamins each day.

Are Fire Safety and Everyday Energy Awareness Related Issues?

Posted on timeOctober 31st, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

If there’s anything we’ve learned in recent months, it is that we should be energy smart whenever possible. Conserving energy in our homes and driving is very worthwhile.  Even though oil prices have come down to half of their peak in mid-2008, we know that they could go up again in a hurry.

My vehicle is a large Yukon, which is great for hauling things.  Mileage is not so good, but I’ve cut back to making three trips to the office weekly whenever possible. That has helped my fuel budget.  I would get a smaller car, but this baby is pretty useful for carrying loads and large groups of people on a trip.

We have tried to cut back on energy usage at home by installing extra insulation and double-pane windows.  The news stories do have some influence on our way of living, hopefully making us think about ways we can cut back with all the energy talk.

Imagine the wasteful expenditure of energy in fighting a wildfire, with Diesel for fuel-guzzling choppers, planes and trucks.  Even the evacuation of thousands of families is an unfortunate waste of gasoline.  There is some related discussion of this on the Minutemanfire website, which includes wildfire prevention in its sphere of interest.  It is amazing that homes could be destroyed even with tile roofs and a swath where the vegetation had been removed.

There’s a lot of wasted energy in the work involved in rebuilding homes demolished by wildfires.  We may not think about it much, but in fact there is a connection between fire prevention and conserving energy.

How to Travel to a Hockey Tournament

Posted on timeOctober 30th, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

Youth Hockey requires travel and sometimes lots of it. However, if you do it right you can do it efficiently and for less money. First of all it is important to carpool with as many other players and families as possible. Of course this is only if the trip is within driving distance. Next, find a vacation home with as many bedrooms as possible. This way, you can fit quite a few people into one house and typically pay about the same amount for the whole house per night as one hotel room, only the hotel room only fits about 4 people comfortably.

For example, when we used to travel to a hockey tournament in Phoenix, AZ. We would only take about 4 cars total. We would also rent a Vacation Home in Phoenix Arizona that would house about 10 - 12 people. We saved a lot of money just by doing these two things. On one occasion we were able to trade our Vail Home with a family in Phoenix.

The next big expense is eating. Hockey players like to eat a lot, but usually are not too picky about what they eat. Therefore, we would go to the buffets where the kids could get all the food they needed to keep up with the energy their body was using.

If you can save money in these three areas, you will save quite a bit of money on these typically expensive hockey trips. Of course some expenses like hockey equipement and trips to the dentist are unavoidable!

Garage Shelf - Fantastic Solution

Posted on timeOctober 30th, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

Quite often people do come across practical ideas of making things for the convenience of all. Some of these products are designed for conveniences and on coming across such a product I like to make it known to others for their benefits.

Recently, I came across a product that really made sense and helped me with a huge problem around my home, which is storage. If you are like me, my garage seems to be the catchall area for everything and anything. Look at the most common items like hoses, rakes, shovels, oil bottles that tend to get accumulated there and without your ever getting to know of these. Of course, wall shelves are the answer here. I have shelves installed on the walls, but most of the time, they seem to do more to get in the way than they help as I have limited space in the garage and the shelves only make it more difficult to move around the cars.

I ran across a new aluminum folding shelf, which is one of the best storage solutions I have found in a long time. You can fold up the aluminum shelf against the wall when not in use I have found myself in many situations where I have to move things around just to be able to get objects out of the normal shelving units to move the lawn mower or some other object out of the way just to be able to get something done. Because they fold up, you get all the needed clearance for moving things conveniently.

The installation of these shelves in the garage proved so helpful that I didn’t take long to have an additional one for an enclosed motorbike enclosure. You see, the limitation with the trailer shelves is that they come on the way while you load or unload something. These shelves allow me to unload the motorcycle, drop the shelves down and I get the storage space when needed. Now, there is not clutter on the floor of the trailer and no strain of shifting things all around, like it was earlier.

How to Brush a Cat’s Teeth

Posted on timeOctober 29th, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

It can be extremely tricky to clean your cat’s teeth.  A cat typically will not let you just brush his/her teeth.  So what can you do?  Get them used to it by slowly introducing them to having it done.

One easy thing you do a grooming sessions at the same time every night.  Start your night off by brushing the cat’s hair first.  Be gentle and get them used to being brushed.  The will allow you to easy into the teeth brushing.

Next, get your cat to lay down and get them relaxed.  Brush the cat for another few minutes and then break out the tooth brush.  Slowly pet the cat near the chin and mouth area and then slowly move the brush up to the cat’s teeth.  Start off slow as the cat will probably not like it at all.  Make sure you gently hold the cat in place while you start brushing.  If the cat is moving to much you may have to grab the fur firmly (not rough) on the back of the cat’s neck while you are brushing.

Brush the cat’s teeth with soft even strokes.  It will only take a minute or 2 to fully brush the cat’s teeth.  Don’t be too forceful or you will scare the cat and he/she will never let you brush their teeth.  If your cat is very active it may be impossible to brush the cat’s teeth on your own with no help.  In this situation a second person may be required.

Don’t worry if you can’t brush the cat’s teeth every single night.  To help keep your cats teeth clean you might also decide to give them cat treats that offer a whitening and protection.

Jeans For Working People

Posted on timeOctober 29th, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

Perhaps you never heard of Carhartt Jeans before. You should know that Hamilton Carhartt began making tough-as-nails Carhartt Jeans for railroad workers way back in 1889. The duck and denim fabrics that oufitted the men that built the railroads are still the cornerstone of Carhartt Jeans and they are sill made tough-as-nails for today’s hard working men and women.

Why Carhartt Jeans Are Different

Whether it’s the traditional, relaxed, loose or dungaree fit, Carhartt jeans are built to feel good and to last forever. That has been the standard since day one. Premium duck and denim fabric means unmatched durability. Carhatt jeans are designed for a comfortable fit not trendy observance. The unique U-shaped crotch like that on the Carhartt work pants provides ample room for up and down movement. You will find a choice of multiple linings for different weather conditions, including flannel. Many of those Ice Road Truckers you saw on TV recently were wearing flannel lined Carhartt Jeans. There’s Big and Tall Carhartt too.

The Jeans For The People Who Get Things Done

Maybe you won’t see too many pairs of Carhartt Jeans in the fashion trendy front row seats at NASCAR races and other outdoor sports events, but you will see them in the garages, in the prep areas and and in the pits where the real work gets done.

Portable air conditioners

Posted on timeOctober 29th, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

A portable air conditioner is one on wheels that can be easily transported inside a home or office. They are currently available with capacities of about 6,000 to 60,000 BTU/h (1,800 to 18,000 watts output) and with and without electric resistance heaters. Portable true air conditioners come in two forms, split and hose. Evaporative coolers, sometimes called conditioners, are also portable.

Air-cooled portable air conditioners are compressor-based refrigerant system that use air to exchange heat, in the same way as a car or typical household air conditioner. With this type of system the air is dehumidified as it is cooled. They collect water condensed from the cooled air, and produce hot air which must be vented outside of the cooled area (they transfer heat from the air in the cooled area to air which must be vented).

A split system has an indoor unit on wheels connected to an outdoor unit via flexible pipes, similar to a permanently fixed installed unit.

Hose systems, which can be Air-to-Air and Monoblock, are vented to the outside via air ducts. The “monoblock” version collects the water in a bucket or tray and stops when full. The Air-to-Air version re-evaporates the water and discharges it through the ducted hose, and can run continuously.

A single-duct unit draws air out of the room to cool its condenser, and then vents it outside. This air is replaced by hot air from outside or other rooms, thus reducing efficiency. Modern units run on approximately 1 to 3 ratio i.e., to produce 3 kW of cooling this will use 1 kW of electricity. A dual-duct unit draws air from outside to cool its condenser instead of from inside the room, and thus is more efficient than most single-duct units.

Evaporative air coolers, sometimes called swamp air conditioners, do not have a compressor or condenser. Liquid water is evaporated on the cooling fins, releasing the vapour into the cooled area. Evaporating water absorbs a significant amount of heat, the latent heat of vaporisation, cooling the air—humans and other animals use the same mechanism to cool themselves by sweating. Disadvantages are that unless ambient humidity is low (dry climate) cooling is limited and the cooled air is very humid and can feel clammy. They have the advantage of needing no hoses to vent heat outside the cooled area, making them truly portable; and they are very cheap to install and use less energy than refrigerative air conditioners.

Skin Cancer and Vitamin A

Posted on timeOctober 29th, 2009 by userOnline Professional    flagComments Off

The skin and mucosal cells (cells that line the airways, digestive tract, and urinary tract) function as a barrier and form the body’s first line of defense against infection. Retinol (vitamin A) and its metabolites (e.g. beta carotene which is converted to vitamin A) are required to maintain the integrity and function of these cells. (Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. 1999).

n 1999 Researchers from the University of Michigan reported that ultraviolet irradiation from the sun causes a major loss of retinoic acid receptors in skin cells. They concluded that ultraviolet irradiation causes a vitamin A deficiency that may have harmful effects on skin function, contributing to premature aging of the skin and the creation of skin cancer. (Nature Medicine 1999; 5(4): 418-422).

n 2001 researchers from The University of Texas, Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Arizona looked at the effects of sun exposure and retinoic acid (vitamin A) receptors in skin cells.

The study examined these effects in relation to squamous skin carcinogenesis (SCC) (the process by which normal cells are transformed into cancer cells).

They observed a progressive decrease in retinoic acid (vitamin A) receptors from normal skin to precancerous skin progressing to invasive skin SCC (squamous cell carcinogenesis).

Their results indicate that the suppression of retinoid (vitamin A) receptors occurs early in the precancerous stage and is associated with progression of squamous skin carcinogenesis (the creation of cancer). (Cancer Res, 61: 4306-10, 2001).

Swedish researchers, reporting in the journal Experimental Dermatology in 2003, used cultured normal human keratinocytes and melanocytes (skin cells) to examine the effects of UV irradiation on the main retinoid receptors in the human skin.

The keratinocyte is the major cell type of the epidermis (outer layer of skin), making up about 90% of epidermal cells. Melanocytes are cells located in the bottom layer of the skin’s epidermis.

The authors concluded that a depletion of vitamin A and retinoid receptors, together with other factors, by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation might seriously interfere with retinoid (vitamin A) signalling and therefore promote future tumour development, especially in keratinocytes (see above). (Exp Dermatol. 2003 Oct;12(5):563-71).

In 1993 Edes and a colleague at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Affairs Hospital, Columbia, Missouri, reported in a review that exposure to benzopyrene, a carcinogen (cancer causing substance) causes vitamin A depletion in exposed tissues.

They noted that the effect is apparent while on a vitamin A sufficient diet but significantly, without a decline in serum (blood) Vitamin A. In other words, benzopyrene depleted vitamin A even when the diet was adequate in the vitamin, and this depletion is not apparent in blood tests.

Benzopyrene also known as benzo(a)pyrene is found in coal tar, in automobile exhaust fumes (especially from diesel engines), tobacco smoke, and in charbroiled food. Recent studies have revealed that levels of benzopyrene in burnt toast are significantly higher than once thought, although it is unproven whether burnt toast is itself carcinogenic. (Wikipedia).

Reviewing the studies to date they observed that although these studies involved dietary intake of benzopyrene, it would be realistic to surmise cigarette smoke exposure would have a similar effect. (Ann N Y Acad Sci. 1993 May 28;686:203-11; discussion 211-2. Review).
