Microsoft Commences Testing of AI-Powered Search for Windows

Microsoft is embarking on a transformative journey to enhance the Windows 11 user experience with the power of artificial intelligence (AI). The company is currently testing an AI-powered search feature in a new developer channel build for Windows 11 Insider testers, marking a significant step towards a more intuitive and efficient way to interact with the operating system. This innovative search functionality leverages semantic indexing, allowing users to search for local files using natural, conversational language, as opposed to the traditional method of relying on precise keywords. This represents a shift from rigid keyword matching to a more nuanced understanding of user intent, promising a more fluid and user-friendly search experience.

This AI-powered search experience is deeply integrated into the Windows 11 ecosystem, accessible across various entry points, including the search boxes within the Settings app, File Explorer, and the ever-present taskbar. Remarkably, this functionality doesn’t require a constant internet connection, thanks to the dedicated Neural Processing Units (NPUs) found on Copilot Plus PCs. These specialized processors are designed to handle the complex computations required for AI tasks, enabling offline functionality and delivering a seamless and responsive search experience, regardless of network connectivity.

Initially, the scope of this AI-powered search is focused on Windows settings and common file formats, including images (JPEG, PNG), documents (PDF, TXT), and spreadsheets (XLS). This targeted approach allows Microsoft to refine the AI models and optimize performance before expanding to a broader range of file types. Furthermore, user privacy and control remain paramount. The AI search only accesses files within locations specifically designated by the user for indexing. Users can easily customize these indexed locations through the “Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows” menu, offering granular control over the scope of the search function. An “Enhanced” option is also available for users who prefer to index their entire machine for comprehensive search capabilities.

Looking ahead, Microsoft plans to expand the capabilities of the AI-powered search to encompass cloud-based data, specifically targeting files stored in OneDrive. This integration will seamlessly bridge the gap between local and cloud storage, providing a unified and comprehensive search experience across the user’s digital ecosystem. This integration will enable users to search across their entire digital landscape without the need to differentiate between local and cloud-based files.

The rollout of this groundbreaking AI-powered search is currently underway, targeting Windows Insiders on Snapdragon-powered Copilot Plus PCs initially. Subsequent phases will extend support to Intel and AMD Copilot Plus computers, ensuring broad compatibility across a range of hardware platforms. Furthermore, language support is a key consideration, with the feature currently catering to Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish languages, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to global accessibility.

Beyond the revolutionary AI-powered search, this new build introduces further enhancements to Windows 11’s AI capabilities. The “Click to Do” feature, activated by holding the Windows key and left-clicking, now offers advanced AI writing tools within its context-sensitive menus. Specifically, the “Rewrite” option now includes a “Refine” sub-option, empowering users to instantly correct grammatical errors within selected text. This integration of AI-driven writing assistance streamlines the content creation process, enhancing productivity and ensuring polished, grammatically correct writing.
