Oil of oregano is a potent antiseptic used both topically and internally. Research demonstrates that it is effective in killing a range of organisms, especially yeast and bacteria. The smell of oregano is common in Italian, Mediteranian, North African and Mexican cooking establishments. Oregano is a name for several different species of plants, with similar characteristics. The active ingredients of oregano are thymol and carvacrol.
Thymol and carvacrol compounds that can apparently inhibit the growth of fungi, worms, and possibly other organisms; in fact, some sources even recommend rubbing a drop or two of oregano oil into an area that is itching due to athlete’s foot, a common condition caused by the tinea versicolor fungus.
Mild stomach settling and cough clearing qualities are attributed to oregano oil; they are likely due to the presence of thymol and carvacrol as well. (Another common culinary herb thyme also contains high concentrations of these compounds.) A drop or two of oregano oil mixed with milk or juice may well calm an upset stomach and aid digestion.
While the ‘killing action’ of oregano oil in many studies was the result of activity in a “test tube” or culture media, enterically coated products will deliver the oil into the GI tract. As at the time of writing, these antibacterial actions have not yet been confirmed by human clinical trials.
One study where oil of Mediterranean oregano Oreganum vulgare was orally administered to fourteen adult patients whose stools tested positive for enteric parasites, Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba hartmanni and Endolimax nana.
After Six weeks of supplementation with 600 mg emulsified oil of oregano daily, there was complete disappearance of Entamoeba hartmanni (4 cases), Endolimax nana (1 case), and Blastocystis hominis in 8 cases. Also, Blastocystis hominis scores declined in 3 additional cases. Gastrointestinal symptoms improved in seven of the eleven patients who had tested positive for Blastocystis hominis.
Natural oregano is available over the counter at your local or internet health foods store. Look for a extract of oregano to ensure the product contains active ingredients so that you also receive the benefits reported about the herb. Sticking with name brands like Solaray, Source Naturals, and Natures Plus will ensure quality and purity when purchasing a product.
