This must be a real proud moment for Chinese smartphone manufacturer, OPPO, as its share of the smartphone market for Q1 of 2017 dominated Samsung. Based in Dongguan, Guangdong, OPPO is taking over the market in several countries and just may be coming to a store near you quite soon as well.

Not well known around the United States and Europe yet, as much as it is in Asian markets, OPPO came in third place globally. The data was provided by Strategy Analytics, which surprised many by giving OPPO the third spot, just behind the Apple iPhone 7 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus.

OPPO’s strength is coming from its dominance around China, India and Pakistan, where there is a large smartphone market and an even larger demand for the latest gadgets. Samsung had the final two spots on the list of top five smartphones being used around the world, with Samsung Galaxy J3 and J5 from 2016.

While Samsung and Apple reigned supreme in Asian and South Asian smartphone markets for years, they are beginning to seriously lose their ground now. OPPO, along with several relatively newer smartphone brands, are offering feature-packed phones at a much better price.

Which OPPO Phone Made it to the Ranking?

The OPPO R9s had a 2.5% share of the total smartphone market. 8.9 million units of the device were shipped out in Q1 of 2017 alone, making the rest of the year an exciting one to be observing. If OPPO can manage this momentum till the end of 2017, Apple and Samsung should really reconsider where they stand amongst consumers.

Strategy Analytics pointed out that 353.3 million smartphones were shipped and sold during Q1 2017, a slight increase from 333.1 million in the same quarter in 2016. Out of those, Apple claimed to have sold 21.5 million iPhone 7 and 17.4 million iPhone 7 Plus devices. This gives both of Apple’s devices a 11% share of the global smartphone market.

Getting back to the OPPO R9s, the smartphone is truly a contender against some of the best out there.

Just look at the features and decide for yourself:

  • AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 5.5 inches (~73.4% screen-to-body ratio)
  • 1080 x 1920 pixels (~401 ppi pixel density)
  • Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625, Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53
  • 64 GB Internal Storage with 4 GB RAM
  • 16 MP front and back camera
  • Fast battery charging

Now, don’t say that this phone can’t seriously compete with the iPhone and Samsung flagship devices out there. Best of all, the phone only costs CNY 2,799 (Approx. USD 405).

It’s hard to find anything remotely better in that price range and still offer a quality experience.
