This represents a significant leap forward, more than doubling the drop height survivability of previous generations.

A key aspect of this improvement is the delicate balance between drop resistance and scratch resistance. Historically, enhancing one often came at the expense of the other. However, Corning’s Armor 2 glass, utilized in the Samsung S25 Ultra, claims to achieve both superior drop protection and scratch resistance. According to Corning and Samsung, Armor 2 offers four times the scratch resistance of competing lithium-aluminosilicate cover glasses with anti-reflective coatings, while maintaining the same level of scratch protection as its predecessor. This suggests a significant breakthrough in material science, enabling manufacturers to address both vulnerabilities without compromise.

Beyond durability, another important consideration for smartphone screens is clarity and reflectivity. Armor 2 also boasts a significant reduction in screen reflections, similar to the previous generation’s Gorilla Armor glass. The surface on which a phone lands plays a critical role; landing on a sharp or pointed object, even from a lower height, can result in a cracked screen. Similarly, pre-existing scratches can weaken the glass, making it more susceptible to damage from subsequent drops. Therefore, while advancements like Armor 2 significantly reduce the likelihood of cracked screens, they don’t guarantee complete invulnerability.

Furthermore, the accessibility of this advanced technology remains a concern. Currently, Samsung reserves the premium Armor 2 glass for its high-end Ultra model, the S25 Ultra, which comes with a hefty price tag of $1,299. This pricing strategy limits the availability of this enhanced protection to a segment of consumers who can afford the premium flagship device. This raises questions about the equitable distribution of technological advancements and the potential for a two-tiered system where only high-end devices benefit from the latest innovations in screen durability.

Despite the limitations and accessibility challenges, the rapid progress in screen technology suggests a future where cracked screens become less prevalent. The continuous development of stronger and more resilient glass compositions, coupled with innovative manufacturing techniques, promises a new era of more durable smartphones. While achieving truly unbreakable screens may remain a long-term goal, the strides made in recent years inspire optimism.
