Week 1: Welcome back to The Prompt

AI search startup Perplexity has announced that it is considering an acquisition of TikTok, proposing that both companies merge their algorithms. The aim is to avoid granting a monopoly while enhancing TikTok’s transparency. Perplexity also hinted at developing systems in its American data centers to store these systems, despite the line to buy TikTok being lengthy.

Week 2: POLITICS

Under the influence of the Trump administration, investment in AI companies has shifted from promotion of safety checks to promoting freedoms, particularly for those involved in advancing AI. Companies like Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft have appealinged to fair use, aligning with their use of copyrighted works and public data. Additionally, chip manufacturers including SpaceX have pushed back against U.S. policies that restrict chip exports, particularly to China.

Week 3: ETHICS + LAW

AI models now face greater moral responsibility, with some studies showing they can amplify biases and race-based stereotypes. A study on Sora, OpenAI’s video generation tool, found it to amplify gender stereotypes, highlighting a critical issue in how AI is being employed in responsible work.

Week 4: DATA DILEMMAS

To compete with ChatGPT, Meta wanted to rapidly train its Llama 3 usingLibrary Genesis, a torrent library of pirated research papers. Unlike its previous approach, Meta’s pirates warned of legal risks. Meanwhile, DeepSeek, a Chinese startup, gained funding fromLERF Capital, despite initial concerns about pirated material.

Week 5: AI DEAL OF THE WEEK

Distributed Spectrum, a company focused on military detection technologies, raised $25 million in funding, effectively competing with OpenAI. The company’s Llama 3 exceeded previous versions, showing improved reasoning and coding capabilities, while also offering notable value to defense and military interests.

Week 6: DEEP DIVE

DeepSeek released an upgraded model (V3) with advancements in language reasoning and coding. The update included enhancements across benchmark tests, including improved performance in foundational skills. Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek’s co-founder, leverages TaiwaneseHardware and AWS for acceleration, aiming to cool the AI industry.

Week 7: A Bipartisan Waste打造成

A bill aimed at banning DeepSeek from federal devices was introduced in February after a report linked its chatbot to a banned China state telecom. The bill might not gain support from other lawmakers, as it raises security concerns. The Trump administration is also weighing a ban on national security technologies, with some offices advised not to use DeepSeek.

Week 8: OpenAI Gets More Capabilities

OpenAI’s GPT-4o enhances image generation by allowing it to follow complex prompts and produce accurate images without errors. Each iteration improves the model’s ability to follow instructions progressively.

Week 9: AI’s Limitations in Chemistry

Despite excelled at coding and college-level math, AI systems remain behind in drawing chemical structures. Errors and inaccuracies have been observed in AI-based chemistry tools, highlighting the need for further study and robust training.

Week 10: Grok and Gemini

Grok, the AI chatbot, struggled with caffeine diagrams, failing to create accurate molecular structures. Google’s Gemini similarly miscalculated when asked to illustrate chemical structures, underscoring the need for enhanced AI in scientific and educational sectors.
