Strands, a new word puzzle game from The New York Times, challenges players to uncover hidden thematic words within a 6×8 grid of letters. The spangram, "BOOKTITLES," ultimately revealed the overarching connection between the themed words, indicating they were titles of famous literary works. The themed words themselves – SOUND, FURY, PRIDE, PREJUDICE, CRIME, and PUNISHMENT – corresponded to well-known literary pairings: The Sound and the Fury, Pride and Prejudice, and Crime and Punishment.

The puzzle’s challenge stemmed from the initial misdirection of the "Literary Couples" hint. Players might have initially searched for names of literary couples, leading to confusion. The presence of words like "Fury" further complicated the process, as they didn’t immediately suggest a literary connection. However, the discovery of "Crime" likely served as a breakthrough, prompting players to consider titles of classic literature. The limited grid space further hinted at the presence of only three pairs, ultimately leading to the identification of the remaining themed words. The absence of works like War and Peace could be attributed to the game’s preference for shorter words fitting within the grid constraints.
