This misuse represents a grave concern for the international community, demanding urgent attention and innovative solutions to mitigate the risks. Several contemporary cases of genocide and mass atrocities illustrate the alarming trend of leveraging these tools for malicious purposes.
The Yazidi genocide, perpetrated by Daesh (ISIS) in 2014, serves as a stark example. Daesh expertly utilized social media platforms and AI-enhanced software for propaganda dissemination, recruiting new fighters, and inciting hatred against the Yazidis and other minorities. Online magazines like Dabiq became platforms for spreading virulent propaganda, dehumanizing their targets and justifying the atrocities that followed, including the brutal attack on Sinjar. Even a decade later, in 2024, the persistent spread of online hate speech continues to traumatize the Yazidi community, forcing many to flee their homes despite precarious security situations. This demonstrates the long-term impact of online hate speech and the need for effective countermeasures.
The Rohingya genocide in Myanmar provides another chilling example. Amnesty International’s research revealed how Facebook’s algorithms amplified anti-Rohingya sentiment, contributing to real-world violence.
