The PGA Tour has embarked on a new era in golf broadcasting with the launch of its state-of-the-art PGA Tour Studios, a sprawling production facility in Ponte Vedra, Florida. This facility signifies a paradigm shift in how the Tour delivers content to its fans, transitioning from a limited production model to one capable of delivering a multitude of live feeds, original programming, and customized content tailored to various digital platforms. Driven by a new media rights deal with ESPN+ that significantly expanded the volume of live coverage, the Tour outgrew its previous studio, necessitating a purpose-built facility to meet the demands of modern golf broadcasting. The new studios represent a substantial investment in the future of golf media and underline the Tour’s commitment to engaging fans in more dynamic and immersive ways.

The PGA Tour Studios, a three-story edifice designed by Foster + Partners and HLW International, dwarfs its predecessor. Housing seven studios, with the flexibility to expand to twelve, and eight control rooms, expandable to thirteen, the facility can handle the increased production demands of the ESPN+ deal, generating over 5,000 hours of footage annually. Beyond the live feeds – featuring hole, marquee group, featured groups, and a main composite feed – the studios also oversee the production of PGA Tour Champions and Korn Ferry Tour content. Furthermore, the facility serves as the custodian of an immense golf archive, preserving 223,000 hours of footage dating back to 1920, safeguarding the historical record of the sport.

This ambitious undertaking reflects the Tour’s recognition of evolving fan expectations in a rapidly changing media landscape. The strategy centers on “reaching fans where and how they like to consume content,” tailoring each piece of content to the specific platform where it appears. Whether it’s a player profile on Instagram, a quick highlight on X (formerly Twitter), or an engaging short-form video on TikTok, the Tour aims to optimize its content for each platform’s unique audience and format. This multi-platform approach ensures that the Tour connects with a broader demographic, utilizing the strengths of each platform to maximize engagement and reach. While the transition to this new model will be a gradual process, with an initial focus on refining existing content before exploring the full capabilities of the new facility, viewers of PGA Tour Live can expect an immediate enhancement of their viewing experience.

One of the most impressive aspects of the new studios is Studio 1A, a dedicated space for the main broadcast feed. This two-story studio boasts cutting-edge technology, including wall-to-wall LED screens, robotic cameras, and an LED floor. The studio utilizes a sophisticated graphics system akin to the technology used in filming “The Mandalorian,” allowing commentators to appear seamlessly integrated into various virtual environments. While initially the international feed will be consistent across all regions, the long-term vision is to create localized feeds with native language commentators and graphics packages tailored for key markets like the UK, Japan, Korea, and Canada. This personalized approach underscores the Tour’s commitment to cultivating global viewership and expanding the reach of professional golf worldwide.

The Tour’s long-term ambition is to capture every single shot from every tournament, mirroring the comprehensive coverage seen at The Players Championship. While currently limited by cost and logistical complexities, the Tour is actively exploring methods to make this vision a reality. By investing in innovative technologies and streamlining processes, they aim to reduce the cost of capturing every shot live, ultimately enhancing the viewing experience for fans worldwide. The new facility also houses a dedicated video review center, providing officials with access to all camera feeds for real-time rulings, and specialized booths for podcasts. Additionally, Pro Shop, the Tour’s premium content arm analogous to NFL Films, and PGA Tour Radio, scheduled to relocate next year, will also operate from the new studios. This consolidation of operations further streamlines workflow and fosters collaboration across different departments.
