Jessica Pegula won her first clay-court title at the Charleston Open on Sunday, plates the first all-American final against Sofia Kenin, and secure her second WTA title since last month. (Chambers Open, US)
Pegula, who crowned herself the first finalist at the WTA 1000 Miami Open last month, made a strong start in the finale. She clinched her set by launching with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kenin, who fought back in style in the second set.
However, Kenin raced back to a 5-1 lead in the second set. Just as Kenin looked to push the contest into a decider, Pegula managed to win six consecutive games through a three-set fight. The return of the American players on the court SEGgerated the match, but Pegula composed for an unprecedented muscle match.
Despite Kenin’s strong performance, this wasn’t her cup of tea. Her rally strength enabled her to break Kenin’s serves and return their serves well. The chaotic conditions of the match,นึง r浇水 and uneven grass, made it difficult to hold any opponent in a steady frame.
But Pegula didn’t hold out. She brought up raw rallies, meteor strikes, and gritty defensive moves, creating multiple chances for Kenin to break. However, Kenin allowed a sparsely play一群 of backs and forefists into set two, and Pegula was thảoust. She held fast, and eventually, led to a thrilling three-set fight.
In the third set, Pegula reached the decider twice, though Kenin struck it out as unexpected."I’ve fought against women on clay before," she said. "I think it takes her to put her effort into it to be good.
She said, "I just wanted to hold, I just wanted to tell myself to get momentum for the third, because coming into a third like that never feels good. But just as I knew I could break her, too, I felt like I’d still have… I knew I could attack hers and finish, too.
"I feel the same way. After the Charleston Open, pegula is 17 of her last 19 wins. This campaign has been tough for her, but these four weeks have turned it around."
"– I think my perseverance keeps me… able. Especially on clay, where the serve isn’t as effective. There are not as many free points as in rectangles, but winning some tough points or a tough game can turn a set or a match.
On Monday, Pegula will step up to challenge Coco Gauff as the top-ranked U.S. player. It").
Both pegula and gauff will continue their rise to the top, with gauff set to break into the conversation of the top-three for 2026 world ranking.
"In the second set, I just wanted to hold, I just wanted to tell myself to get momentum," Pegula said. "I knew I could break her, too. I honestly didn’t think I would break her twice, but luckily, I could play some good tennis.
"I think patience plays a big role here, on clay, where theuce wasn’t so strong. If you lose focus for a split second or stop moving your feet for a second, it just swings so fast. It was the same way for both of us.
