After Huawei failed to get US carrier support despite a widely speculated deal between it and AT&T, the next biggest Chinese smartphone manufacturer, OnePlus, could be breaking the barrier. According to a new report by CNET, the chief executive of OnePlus hinted at talks to begin with major cellular carriers to promote the device within the United States.
This would be a major breakthrough for one of the hottest Android based smartphones in Asia and other parts of the world, which are yet to make it big in the United States. Huawei was certain of getting a deal with AT&T, but reports pointed out the two failing to reach an agreement at the last moment. OnePlus is yet to begin any formal talks and if all goes well, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer could see a US launch close to the end of 2018.
Pete Lau, chief executive of OnePlus, was the source of the news reported by CNET from CES 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday.
“If the right opportunity and right timing come along, we’ll be very happy to experiment,” Mr. Lau is reported to have said about potentially striking a deal with US mobile carriers.
The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T have been the biggest success for the Chinese phone maker. These devices really brought the company out of the dark and made them serious contenders in the market. OnePlus got off to a slow start, but by introducing feature packed smartphones with 6 GB of RAM and large storage spaces, they were able to fight off a lot of competition around Asia.
Since nearly 90% of smartphone users acquire their devices through carriers in the United States, getting a deal with any one of them would be a monumental achievement for OnePlus. This would put them far ahead of Huawei, which is already established as a smartphone leader in many parts of the world but yet to be in the US.
Will There be an OnePlus 6 in 2018?
Wherever there is talk about OnePlus in the virtual world, there is discussion about when the next OnePlus flagship will come around. There has been no official confirmation by OnePlus itself, but most enthusiasts are certain that a OnePlus 6 is geared up to hit the market by mid-2018.
This could be around the same time when Samsung releases the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.
Reports also mention how OnePlus 6 will come with the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip which was just revealed to the world in December. The Samsung S9 would most likely be the first device to be running off this chip, unless OnePlus beats them first with a new flagship.
This story will continue to develop as new information about OnePlus talks with US carriers emerges. We certainly hope that OnePlus makes an entrance into the US market and gives the current smartphone giants some stiff competition, from which the end consumer should ultimately benefit from.
