Having been released in 2013, nearly four years have passed since the Apple iPhone 5s made its debut. Despite all that time, the Apple iPhone 5s is still a great smartphone for everyday use and can compete with even today’s best.
If you are thinking about getting a new (if you can find one) or used iPhone 5s smartphone, it certainly would not be a bad bet. The 5s was one of the last iPhone devices that really stood the test of time. After the iPhone 6 Plus screen disease and iPhone 6S battery issue, consumers are hesitant in getting new Apple mobiles. One, they are extremely expensive. Secondly, if they still malfunction after some time, what is the point?
Not many people are able to reinvest hundreds of dollars into getting a smartphone and than having to repair. This is especially true since Apple has one of the worst customer service issues known to mankind in the region of India and Pakistan. You may be able to find genuine Apple customer service centers in the US and Europe, but just try looking for a reliable one in Asia who will not rip the skin off your back for a minor repair.

What Makes the Apple iPhone 5s Great?
To start off, the price now is highly attractive. If you manage to find a brand new device, the iPhone 5s may only cost you a meager $300-350. Compare that to $1000-plus for the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Savings and reliability go hand-in-hand here.
The screen is a decent 4.0 inches, but that’s not all what makes the iPhone 5s a good primary or even secondary device. Here are some other pros that make it a valuable phone in my mind entering 2017:
- Quality camera at 8 megapixels
- iOS is upgradeable to the latest version (10.2)
- Apple A7 chipset with Dual-Core 1.3 GHz processor with quad-core graphics
- Comes in 16/32/64 GB variants with 1GB of Ram – which is great for the price and size
- Fingerprint sensor
- Great battery life for normal, everyday usage (up to 10hrs talk time!)
Obviously you can’t compare an iPhone 5s to the Apple iPhone 6S or 7, but it still puts up a good fight. Especially since you don’t have to worry about taking it to a service center because Apple couldn’t make a reliable device in 2016 or 2017.
Don’t forget, the iPhone 5s still has a headphone jack! Just ask any Apple user with an iPhone 7 how valuable that little 3.5 mm hole is.
If used with care, the Apple iPhone 5s could last you another couple of years. This is easier to believe because Apple is still rolling out updates, so you are not going to be missing out in terms of software. For the everyday user, the iPhone 5s is an excellent device and probably the best in that price range.
