Well 2016 flew pretty fast and it was a great time for smartphones. Well, not all smartphones really had a great time – yes, I am talking about the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. But there were still some very good smartphones this year. Without further ado, here are the 5 best smartphones of 2016.
The Best Smartphone of 2016 – Apple iPhone 7 Plus
Apple really played the market well. They didn’t give it all away and yet managed to pull it off with the iPhone 7. The Apple iPhone 7 Plus is a great phone and is on the top of this list for a number of reasons. It may have faced tough competition from Samsung if the Note 7 didn’t start exploding, but got seriously lucky.
Despite having removed the 3.5 mm headphone jack, the iPhone 7 still comes packed with some great features. Its integration with iOS 10 and a 2900 mAh battery gives better performance than many other smartphones with a larger battery. The stereo speakers Apple introduced were a much-needed addition while the 3GB RAM also made the experience all that much better.
The dual camera, water and dust proofing was the cherry on top and ultimately became the reason why Apple managed to retain its spot again this year as the best of the best smartphones of 2016.

The Second-Best Smartphone of 2016 – Samsung Galaxy S7
For me personally, the edge side of a smartphone is pretty hard to handle. The curves and edges may not be for everyone, which is why I left out the edge model on this one. Other than that, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is a well-rounded smartphone. Unfortunately for Samsung, this year was quite tough after what the Note 7 went through. They lost a huge amount on sales, but had the S7 going strong for them still.
It really did not seem much different from the Samsung Galaxy S6 of last year, but still got in some features that gave it an advantage above other best smartphones of 2016. Samsung had to get back on the MicroSD slot bandwagon after previously dropping the idea. The South Korean smartphone maker has to remember that those who choose Samsung and Android are definitely looking for expandable memory. Even the iPhone now comes with 256 GB of internal storage.

The 3rd Best Smartphone of 2016 – Google Pixel XL
There were some big hopes and dreams associated with Google releasing its first ever smartphone. They had previously added on the Nexus brand with other manufacturers such as LG and Huawei, but this was Google’s first time going solo.
While the features and specifications of the Pixel XL were pretty top-of-the-line, the smartphone just did not give the look and feel of a premium device. It can absolutely compete with the Apple iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7, but the Google Pixel still has some milestones to achieve. There needs to be a greater marketing initiative by Google if it wants to continue making smartphones and seriously compete with Samsung and Apple.
It terms of its software, after all it is made by Google – so the Pixel was bound to get the best. There is no competing with the Pixel XL on the Android part of it, especially with the new Google Assistant. The Google Pixel is certainly one of the best smartphones of 2016.
In conclusion, the first Google direct introduced smartphone has been a pretty big hit. It did well in the market, but there is always room for improvement. One of those improvements could have been water and dust proofing like the iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7.
The 4th Best Smartphone of 2016 – Huawei Nexus 6P
Huawei has gone from a regular Chinese smartphone maker to a really sought after brand now. 2016 was a major year for Huawei, especially since it was able to secure the Nexus 6P deal. Huawei showed some great class and style with the Nexus 6P, which was certainly one of the best smartphones of 2016.
Probably the finest aspect of the Nexus 6P was that it is affordable and still brought in some quality features. Its design was solid and impressive while a great battery life and sharp screen only added to the list of benefits. I can confidently say that very few Huawei Nexus 6P owners were unimpressed after getting the phone.
The LG Nexus 5X was also a great and highly economical variant of the Nexus series of 2016. Unfortunately, it was marred with a serious boot-loop problem after Google released Android 7.0 Nougat. Otherwise the Nexus 5x would unquestionably have been a part of this list of the Best smartphones of 2016.
The 5th Best Smartphone of 2016 – Apple iPhone SE
Every year, the phones keep getting bigger and bigger. What happened to a second phone alternative or even just downgrading and making like easier? Apple saw the market opportunity and played it well by introducing the iPhone SE.
With a 4-inch screen and even greater battery life while being up-to-date with latest features, the iPhone SE was made for this list. It is simple, has all the great features of an Apple smartphone and really competes for the price. The Apple iPhone SE even comes with a 64 GB model so you’re not missing out on too much and still have a new smartphone in hand.
Anyone feeling nostalgic about the older Apple days, but can’t compromise on today’s technology? Than the Apple iPhone SE is definitely for you.
