Apple did a pretty good job on the latest iPhone X. In celebration of the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, Apple made a befitting version of the smartphone and skipped right over 9 and straight to ‘X’. It’s great that the iPhone X is incredibly easy to unlock thanks to the amazing Face ID technology, but the iPhone X Tap to Wake option is a much-needed feature as well.
In today’s post, we’re going to talk all about the iPhone X Tap to Wake feature, how to enable and disable it and what other options you have to wake up your Apple smartphone.
Before we get going, it’s a good to keep in mind that your Apple iPhone X will not unlock your device if your eyes are closed when using Face ID. This is mostly for security purposes to ensure that you are fully attentive when unlocking your device. But going into the settings, you are able to allow Face ID to unlock your iPhone X even though your eyes are closed. That’s another discussion for another day.
Ways to Wake Your Apple iPhone X
Apple has made it quite simple. Before you unlock your iPhone X with Face ID, you need to wake the device first. This can be done through the following ways:
- Clicking the Side Button
- Raise to Wake the iPhone X
- iPhone X Tap to Wake
Your Apple iPhone X will not wake up from swiping up. This is done once your iPhone X is awake, has been unlocked with Face ID and then you swipe up to get to the home screen.
Apple even has it’s own guide on how to use gestures to navigate your iPhone X, which is really cool and a must check for users.
Method #1: Wake Up the iPhone X by Clicking the Side Button
This is probably the most popular way to wake up the iPhone X. The iPhone X Tap to Wake can wait for now, because us iPhone users have been waking up our devices like this for years.
It might take us some time getting used to a feature which was commonly used in Android phones for millennia. A lot of Apple iPhone X users may not even be fond of the iPhone X Tap to Wake either, because it just seems like the device might get woken up when we’re not using it. This might be the case when we’re reaching down in our bags or pockets for something else.
Keeping the tradition going, clicking on the side button of the iPhone X is probably the most common way of waking up your iPhone. Once woken up, go ahead and look at it, Face ID will unlock the iPhone X and you can now swipe up to get to the home screen. Since there isn’t any home button or sensor anymore, this is the best way to get in your Apple smartphone.
Some of us might want to preserve our side button and fear damaging it from constant clicking. Keep on reading to get in-depth about other ways to wake your iPhone X.

Method #2: Raise to Wake Your Apple iPhone X
With it’s built-in accelerometer sensor, your iPhone X is able to tell when you pick it up and want to wake it. There is a similarity here between smart watches as well, which activate once you raise your wrist to check out their status and any pending notifications.
I’m personally not too fond of the Raise to Wake feature, which was also present in previous iPhones. But if you find it to be convenient, more power to you.
When you open up your Apple iPhone X for the first time, the Raise to Wake feature should be on by default. If not, here is how to go about enabling it.
How to Turn on Raise to Wake
- Head over to Settings on Your iPhone X
- Tap on Display & Brightness
- Tap the switch where it says ‘Raise to Wake’. Once it turns green, you will know that Raise to Wake has been turned on. Test it out by locking your device, putting it down and then picking it up. If it wakes up the screen, you’re in luck.
How to Turn Off Raise to Wake
- Back to the Settings on your iPhone X
- Head into Display & Brightness
- Tap the green switch next to ‘Raise to Wake’. When it turns white, Raise to Wake will be turned off on your iPhone X. Again, make sure you’ve done it correctly by seeing if the iPhone X wakes up when you pick it up from somewhere.
Method #3: iPhone X Tap to Wake
Older iPhone models allowed us to wake the screen by just pressing on the home button or home sensor. Since the iPhone X doesn’t have a home button or any physical button on the screen, for that matter, the option to Tap to Wake has been introduced.
Probably the easiest method of all the ways to wake up your iPhone X and also keeping your iPhone safe from any accidental waking up is Tap to Wake. iPhone X Tap to Wake is as easy as it sounds and even a baby could do it, quite literally.
iPhone X Tap to Wake allows you to wake up your device by just tapping on that fabulous OLED screen of yours. There are some drawbacks, such as accidently waking the display in your pocket and such, but if this is the way you choose to go, so be it.
How to Enable iPhone X Tap to Wake
- Get into the iPhone X’s settings app
- Head over to the ‘General’ section
- Tap on ‘Accessibility’
- Slide the button next to ‘Tap to Wake’. If it turned green, you have now successfully enabled the iPhone X Tap to Wake feature.
How to Disable iPhone X Tap to Wake
- Open up Settings on your iPhone X
- Tap on the ‘General’ section
- Get into ‘Accessibility’
- Turn off iPhone X Tap to Wake by tapping the green button and making sure it turns white. This will now disable the Tap to Wake feature on your iPhone X.
Bonus Method #4: Hey Siri
You could always wake up your device, or rather, have Siri wake up your device for you. It’s not commonly used for this, but hey, without a home button/sensor, why not get Siri to do some of the work?
